A Baltimore native, Joseph Johnston rejoined the law firm of Morgan Carlo Downs in August 2017, where he had worked from 2010-2014. Before rejoining Morgan Carlo Downs, Mr. Johnston practiced law in Raleigh, North Carolina for three years where he handled primarily construction-related litigation. He litigated cases arising from complex construction defects and worksite accidents, including catastrophic personal injury. Mr. Johnston also represented contractors and suppliers in mechanics’ lien disputes. Outside of his construction litigation practice, Mr. Johnston handled products liability, commercial trucking and auto negligence, premises liability, and professional negligence cases. While in North Carolina, Mr. Johnston tried two cases to verdict before juries and participated in numerous mediated settlement conferences.

During his early years at Morgan Carlo Downs, Mr. Johnston gained valuable jury trial experience representing health care providers in complex medical and dental malpractices cases. He tried cases to verdict before juries in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, and Frederick counties in Maryland while serving as second chair counsel.

Mr. Johnston has briefed and argued cases on appeal before the Maryland Court of Special Appeals and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. During law school, Mr. Johnston served as Editor-in-Chief of the University of Baltimore Law Review. After law school Mr. Johnston served as law clerk to the Honorable James R. Eyler, of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals from 2007-2008.
